There has been a long-running joke of how John Cena is R-Truth’s childhood hero, with the added humor of Trith being severed years older. We understand R-Truth’s schtick and how role in the company. Since John Cena’s return and start of his retirement tour, especially after the heel turn we thought we’d never see, WWE has leaned into this joke even more, with several backstage interactions between the two. Things were bo different Saturday night at Backlash.
That is surprising because many fans wrote it off as something that would happen every once in a while on Raw. R-Truth has now amped up the joke by actively interfering in Cena’s WWE Title defense against Randy Orton due to his perceived friendship with Cena, only to be met with an RKO for his troubles. Fortunately for Cena, he took advantage of this and retained his Championship. For all we knew, that was the end of it.
Much like at WrestleMania, even as a heel, the fans are still cheering for John Cena, despite his or writing’s best efforts to be the heel. The chants he got after the match and his at first apologetic comments at the post-show press conference were intriguing, although we can all ageee that a decent back into the good graces of the fans as a whole seem entirely too early.
However, the situation took an interesting turn when R-Truth made his way out, unintentionally crashing Cena’s press conference. Truth was adamant about congratulating Cena and telling him how proud he was. Cena didn’t take kindly to this once Truth innocently and accidentally mentioned how fans still don’t think Cena can wrestle. After a warning about another word, Truth didn’t take the hint and was AA’s through the table.
With all that being said and the surprising continuation of this joke, I had an idea. Unfortunately, my idea is likely moot after the heavily rumored match between the two at the upcoming Saturday Night’s Main Event. However, let’s ignore that for a second. What I’d actually like to see going forward is this exact scenario repeatedly playing out at each of Cena’s Title defenses until one day Cena asks for a match with Truth, but also is willing to put his Championship on the line to give this a rest once and for all.
Most people would write this off as that being the end of it and another retention by Cena, and rightfully so. However, I’d go one step further and actually have R-Truth go over and become the WWE Champion. Given, Truth’s reign would be extremely short but this leads into Cena realizing the error of his ways after underestimating R-Truth. Thus begins Cena’s redemption story. We don’t need Cena to retire as a heel or as Champion. As far as R-Truth goes, it would be a nice gesture to reward him for his years and dedication and entertainment. The most likely scenario would be someone cashing in their Money In the Bank on him but I wouldn’t mind a one month reign with at least one successful defense.
This is obviously a pipe dream but dammit if it’s not entertaining and fun to think about. If they’re gonna continue the joke with R-Truth and John Cena, let’s make it count! I don’t want to hear about this lowering the prestige of the Championship either, as it’s not that serious. Once this is behind us, let’s see how they play out Cena’s redemption arc and inevitable retirement. Thoughts?
