Extreme Fools

I was going to write my review of WWE Extreme Rules last Sunday.  Overall, I didn't really think much of it.  Up until the last match, my plan was to do a review of the show and talk about the good and bad about the show.  However, it was during the last match that I changed my approach going into this blog.  In what was sure to be the match of the night, it was decided that the Iron Man Match for the Intercontinental Title between Dolph Ziggler and Seth Rollins would headline Extreme Rules.  Very rarely does the Intercontinental Title main event a show, but it makes sense when your top Champion never shows up.  But that's neither here nor there!  I was really enjoying the match and then something happened that usually only happens when a bad match is taking place.  The fans!

Since it was an Iron Man Match, there was a clock counting down until the 30 minutes were up.  The man with the most victories would be the winner.  At first, what went down was somewhat amusing to me.  When it was close to a minute ending, the fans counted down from ten seconds out as if they were awaiting a Royal Rumble entrant.  When the next minute arrived, the fans made the sound the buzzer makes when a Royal Rumble entrant comes out.  The first couple of times, I found it amusing, but figured it would stop shortly.  How wrong I was!  The fans kept doing it several times over and it was really taking away from the match.  A fantastic match was taking place in front of this Pittsburgh crowd and they couldn't care less!  I just don't understand it!  It got downright disrespectful!  In a decision that was intended on defusing the situation, WWE took the digital clock away.  However, fans still continued to do it.  Now it made even less sense because they weren't even counting down an actual minute anymore.  People were doing just to do it.  A day later, people were notified about a conversation of frustration between Ziggler and Rollins happening in the ring, with one superstar stating it was even worse without the clock.

This kind of thing gives fans a bad name.  I'm watching this, thinking, "what match are you watching?  It's not like it was a boring match or a bad match.  It was a great match with two quality ring technicians, especially the way the sequence of the first several falls went down.  It was brilliantly booked!  I'll say it again!  What the fans in the arena did was completely disrespectful!  Fans always complain about not getting what they want.  They finally get it and they still complain! I'm also talking about the idiots that paid all this money only to play with a beach ball during other recent Pay-Per-Views.  I don't understand throwing your money away like that!  Even if I'm not enjoying the match, I'll still sit there to get my money's worth!  It's bad enough when fans do this kind of thing during a Roman Reigns match, but this really takes the cake!  There is such a thing as being disrespectful to wrestlers.  These men and women work hard, travel constantly, and get hurt just to entertain the fans and what do these fans do in return?

Watching a match at home is different from watching live at the arena.  Part of the experience of me watching at home is how the crowd is reacting.  People have the right to boo or cheer for whatever but this was going too far.  It took away from my experience watching this match.  I can definitely understand the frustration and anger that Ziggler and Rollins must have felt.  I'm sure everyone in the back was pissed as well!  The way these fans acted was totally uncalled for!  That's why this blog is dedicated to these people that claim to be fans.  This crowd will live on in infamy and I will now refer to them as Extreme Fools!

Extreme Rules 2018 Predictions

It seems like just yesterday, Money In the Bank took place.  Now we have come to tonight's event, Extreme Rules.  Personally, I think they should scrap this Pay-Per-View from the calendar.  There really aren't too many matches that would register as extreme and many of these gimmick matches should really only take place if the feud calls for it.  For instance, as entertaining as I'm sure it will be, I don't think we need Braun/Owens in a steel cage.  Besides, there are a lot more limitations on these kinds of matches these days; not that that's a bad thing!  Anyway, let's get to it!

KICK-OFF

Six-Man Tag Team Tables Match - The New Day vs. Sanity
The first match on the Kick-Off show features Sanity's first PPV appearance on the main roster.  During The New Day's pancake eating contest, chaos emerged, as Sanity attacked them, leading to this match.  The New Day are so established that a loss will not hurt them.  I'm pretty sure the chaotic trio is taking the win here.  Eric Young has been a mainstay in professional wrestling for quite a while so you already know what to expect from him.  The first time Sanity appeared together, I wasn't into it.  I thought Young was better than that.  Eventually, Killian Dane and Alexander Wolfe changed my mind about them, especially at War Games last year.  That said, I'm taking Sanity for the victory.

Sin Cara vs. Andrade "Cien" Almas
When Almas debuted on Smackdown, alongside Zelina Vega, he immediately targeted an old Mexican acquaintance in Sin Cara.  On a recent episode of Smackdown, Almas defeated Sin Cara and now we have the rematch.  As much as it's possible for Sin Cara to take back the win so the two can have a rubber match, I'm pretty sure Almas will prevail yet again and move up the card slightly.  This is absolutely fine for his first Smackdown feud but I think this will be short-lived.  As for what may come next for Almas, we'll have to wait and see and hope there is a plan for him since coming from NXT.

Steel Cage Match - Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens
I mentioned this match earlier, thinking the feud doesn't necessitate a steel cage, but I don't want that to come off as a complaint whatsoever.  The feud between the two has been very entertaining thus far.  It's funny because no matter how much Owens seems to get away with whenever he mentions Stephanie McMahon's name to Kurt Angle, he hasn't been able to get the better of the Monster Among Men.  With Sami Zayn out with an injury, I don't really see any way for Owens to get the victory.  The only way in my opinion is for Triple H to interfere.  After all, two years ago, Triple H practically handed the Universal Championship to him.  Also, at last year's Survivor Series, Braun felt slighted when Hunter took credit for both surviving, and promptly destroyed him afterward.  My official pick, however, is Braun, or should I say, Mr. Monster In the Bank!

Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin
As if we didn't already have enough authority figures on Raw, Corbin has been appointed as the Constable.  Even though this may be Corbin's most entertaining stint yet, I still find him to be a black hole of charisma and unfortunately, even with a talent like Balor in there, I just can't get into it.  I almost feel this match should be on the Kick-Off show, also because it's the least relevant of the enormous amount of matches on the card.  Since this situation is brand new for Corbin, I'm sticking with him for the win.

Raw Tag Team Titles - Deleters of Worlds vs. The B Team
Since the Greatest Royal Rumble event in April, Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt have been the Raw Tag Team Champions and have gelled quite well as a team.  Now new contenders have arisen, in the form of Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas, who named themselves The B Team, assuring people that the B stands for best.  Fortunately for them, they've been undefeated since The Miz left for Smackdown,  In fact, the former Miztourage have arguably done better without The Miz then with him.  The B Team have also managed to fight back with mind games, imitating Hardy and Wyatt.  It's actually quite amazing how much Bo resembles when Bray, his real-life brother.  I think the wins stop here, as Matt and Bray will retain the Titles tonight.  Should another match take place after this, it wouldn't surprise me to
see the B team taking a dip in the "Lake of Reincarnation" and reemerge as Woken Warriors.  And it will be...WONDERFUL!!!

Smackdown Tag Team Titles: Bludgeon Brothers vs. Team Hell No
There's no need to adjust your eyes because you read that right.  Daniel Bryan and Kane have reunited and now they are number one contenders.  Bryan made his triumphant return to the ring at Wrestle Mania and has since been on a role.  He lasted the longest in the Greatest Royal Rumble at over 70 minutes, and has mostly won matches.  Bryan's problem with The Miz still remains and he has been a thorn in Bryan's side lately.  In fact, it was The Miz that instigated the attacks on Bryan by the Bludgeon Brothers.  Much to the dismay of The Miz, Kane has come to the rescue of his former partner and of course, they hugged it out.  As cool as it would be for Team Hell No to get another run as Tag Team Champions, I'm going with Harper and Rowan here, with or without help from The Miz.  It's also because Kane is running for Mayor of Knox County, Tennessee.  It's entirely possible WWE may go with the Bryan/Miz program at SummerSlam, because I agree with Bryan in that I don't have faith that the story can be told all the way to next year's WrestleMania.

Smackdown Women's Title - Carmella vs. Asuka
Carmella may have actually been ready for Asuka, as she managed to retain her Title due to the return of one James Ellsworth.  Since Money In the Bank, the chinless wonder has been a thorn in the side of Asuka.  However, Asuka has now had the pleasure of defeating Ellsworth in two matches.  He still may be a factor for Carmella but it might be a little harder, as he will be hovering above the ring in a shark cage.  Man, does WWE love shark cages!  I wouldn't complain if the Empress of Tomorrow emerged as Champion but I'm still going with Carmella retaining because for now, one thing is clear and that is...'Mella is money!

Raw Women's Title - Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax
The story continues with these two, as Alexa executed her best play yet last month at Money In the Bank.  She attacked Ronda Rousey during her match with Nia for the Title, causing a disqualification win, yet no Title for Rousey.  She then attacked Nia and proceeded to cash in her newly won "Money In the Bank" contract to once again become Champion.  With Ronda being suspended for 30 days after her vicious attack on Alexa, as well as Raw GM Kurt Angle, Alexa must now face the consequences of her former best-friend, the Irresistible Force herself.  Even though Alexa's buddy Mickie James is sure to be there, Ronda Rousey may show be a factor as well.  Even though she still has a few days left on her suspension, nothing stopped her from buying a ticket to show up and watch the show.  As for the result, I'm going with Alexa to retain.  More important is where we go from here and it's fun to think of all the possibilities in the Raw women's division.

US Title - Jeff Hardy vs, Shinsuke Nakamura
Shinsuke has come off a string of matches against AJ Styles, in his unsuccessful quest to win the WWE Title.  Now he has the opportunity to take the US Title from Jeff Hardy.  The match itself should be great and had it not been for Nakamura's recent run-in with a dog and its bite, we have have seen the match on Smackdown.  I originally chose Hardy to retain tonight but he has had the Title since April and it might be time for Nakamura's first singles Championship since coming to Smackdown.

Intercontinental Title - 30 Minute Iron Man Match - Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins
The night after Rollins' successful Title defense against Elias, he made an open challenge.  The Show-Off accepted the challenge and with a little help from running buddy Drew McIntyre, gained his sixth Intercontinental Championship.  Once this match's stipulation was made, I already believed it would be the match of the night.  With no added stipulation to the WWE Title match and the Universal Championship nowhere to be found, this could possibly close the show.  Both are incredible athletes and performers.  Rollins absolutely killed it in his Intercontinental Title run and Ziggler is always someone that can be counted on.  I'm taking Rollins for the win due to botched interference by McIntyre.  After a double-team on Rollins post-match, I see Dean Ambrose returning to even the odds.

Roman Reigns vs. Bobby Lashley
With Brock Lesnar still not around to defend his Universal Championship, this match just seems like filler to me.  I'm actually surprised there's no stipulation for this match, considering the pull-apart these two just had on Raw.  This match is about respect and bragging rights but I think it might determine Lesnar's SummerSlam opponent and Championship challenger.  In my world, Reigns, though I'm fairly indifferent towards him and not a fan of his booking, had already defeated Lesnar back at WrestleMania and is the rightful Universal Champion.  That is why I'm going with Roman to win tonight.

WWE Title - AJ Styles vs. Rusev
To the surprise and delight of many, Rusev won a number one contender match and will challenge AJ for the WWE Title tonight.  We could be in for a very Happy Rusev Day!  Then again, it's never a good idea to count out the Phenomenal One.  As happy as I would be for Rusev to win, especially considering how popular he is these days, I still have to go with AJ to retain.  After all, rumors stated that Styles is still the Champion due to being on the cover of WWE 2K19 and the game doesn't come out officially until the late Fall.  Even so, I probably still would have chosen AJ anyway.  I am very behind Rusev and do want to see him one day become WWE Champion but I don't think tonight is his time.

Misconception About the Roman Reigns "Haters"

Before I get to the premise of this blog, I feel obligated to address something.  I understand that there most certainly is ridiculous hatred towards the character of Roman Reigns in WWE.  There are fans that are irrationally hating for no other reason than to join the bandwagon.  Much like politics, there is an extreme to the other side as well.  There are fans of Roman Reigns that are so hardcore about it that they insult the so-called "haters," if God forbid someone doesn't like their favorite wrestler.  In fact, I have a friend who tweeted something funny and completely harmless about her dislike for Roman Reigns but was ridiculed for the next 24 hours after, which I'll get into later on.  I do want to discuss why I think there is this hatred for Reigns, when it started, and ultimately, the near impossible task of fixing it.

Let's take a trip and go back, way before this all began to pick up steam.  Before I get to the 2014 Royal Rumble, which had nothing to do with Reigns but would be related to him the year after somehow, let's actually go to the 2013 Survivor Series.  For a full year, The Shield had been running roughshod on WWE.  They dominated everyone that came into their path and won Championships.  In my opinion, especially by the time The Shield disbanded, there were moments where Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns all displayed leadership of the group and a break-out quality.  At the 2013 Survivor Series, Reigns became the "Sole Survivor" of his team.  Again, I like to reiterate that "sole" means one.  There is no such thing as multiple "sole" survivors in the same match.  Reigns being the "Sole Survivor" was a cool moment but under the surface, some fans decided it was for a grand purpose.

The Batista Effect
Here we are at the 2014 Royal Rumble!  Roman Reigns surpassed Kane's Rumble elimination record from 2001 with a new total of 12.  That may be another thing that led to the eventual hate of Reigns.  However, believe it or not, I truly believe the hate for Reigns stemmed from the hate from another wrestler, Batista.  To be fair, I don't think the fans actually even hated Batista but when fans read the dirt sheets about The Animal returning to win the Royal Rumble to main event WrestleMania, they were not having it. Sadly, I need to admit I was one of those fans, at least for a brief time.  The timing was also off because many fans were behind Daniel Bryan and his underdog journey back to the top.

Before the Rumble match, Daniel Bryan battled Bray Wyatt and lost.  Fans still thought that this was just a setback, and he would return later in the night to participate in and possibly win the Royal Rumble match.  By the time the Rumble was 2/3 of the way through, fans were starting to doubt Bryan would be in the match and started to become restless.  That became more apparent as the match continued.  The buzzer for number 30 rang and I've never seen so many people boo Rey Misterio the way they did that night.  Poor Rey didn't deserve all that hate.  However, it was only because he was not Daniel Bryan.  It was more about booing the situation, which incidentally, has a lot to do with the hate for Roman Reigns.  If they really wanted heat for entrant number 30, it would have been great to have it be Bad News Barrett.  Picture this, they start playing Bryan's music but he doesn't show up.  Out walks Barrett to a chorus of boos, as he proclaims, with mic in hand; "Were you expecting someone else?  Well!  I'm afraid I've got some bad news!"

The last three men left were Batista, Sheamus, and Roman Reigns.  The fans had grown tired of Sheamus as well, and were happy to see him be eliminated.  Here's the irony that wouldn't be realized until the next year!  Roman Reigns, a heel, was getting cheered over Batista.  Once the fans realized Daniel Bryan truly wasn't there, they needed someone to support.  Since the hatred of Batista had begun long before the Rumble match, the fans chose the lesser of two evils in their opinions, Roman Reigns.  In the end, Batista did in fact win the Royal Rumble.  Thankfully, Bryan was so over that he ended up not only in the main event of WrestleMania, he even won the WWE Title.  And so begins the journey of Roman Reigns.

At Payback 2014, The Shield were now fan favorites and defeated Evolution once and for all.  The next night, the unthinkable happened! Seth Rollins turned his back on Ambrose and Reigns and joined The Authority.  Ambrose took it personal and feuded with Rollins, while Reigns battled other Authority members, such as Randy Orton.  Reigns was really getting over here as a fan favorite and fans were even starting to prefer him to John Cena.  Reigns soon went down with an injury that kept him out until December.  The first mistake with Roman started happening around this time.  The dirt sheets reared their ugly heads again regarding Reigns being backed by WWE as the next "guy!"  The fans, of course, started to groan.  I don't really get why fans all of a sudden started to dislike the guy just because he was rumored to be prepped as the next top guy.  However, knowing that, WWE made a big mistake by naming Reigns as the winner of the "Superstar of the Year" Slammy Award.  You can't tell me those things aren't rigged and that the results were actually fan based.  Not only was Reigns being groomed, he was set to win the Royal Rumble and main event WrestleMania, much like Batista the year before.  During his time away, I think an out of sight/out of mind mentality was taking place, and it should have remained.  Reigns did make his return at the TLC Pay-Per-View in December and set his sights on the Royal Rumble.  Perhaps it would have been better to wait until the Royal Rumble itself and have him be a surprise entrant after all the other favorites were eliminated.

Daniel Bryan ended up being added to the main event of WrestleMania XXX, which included WWE Champion Randy Orton and Royal Rumble winner Batista, after having defeated Triple H earlier in the night.  He left WrestleMania as the WWE Champion.  Unfortunately, Bryan sustained an injury and was forced to relinquish his Title less than two months into his reign.  Because of that, fans felt he never got the run he deserved.  The fans were once again rampant for Daniel Bryan and it was to the detriment of Roman Reigns.  Mistake number two in my opinion is even having Daniel Bryan in the 2015 Royal Rumble at all!  In fact, I'd go so far as to keep him away until WrestleMania.  If Bryan wasn't a thought, Reigns getting booed would be less likely.  But alas, Bryan was in the Rumble, while Reigns eventually won it later on.  At this time, I was one of the people that didn't want Reigns to win.  However, it's not for the reason you may think.  I didn't want him to win because I felt it would be unfair to him the way he was to inevitably be treated.  But, if you put Daniel Bryan in the match, what were we supposed to expect?  Reigns didn't deserve the hate he received but it was going to happen regardless.

Not only that, it was a poorly booked Rumble match!  As I mentioned, Bryan was eliminated early when Bray Wyatt simply bumped him off the apron and onto the floor.  Due to Bryan's elimination, the fans decided to try and take to someone else before jumping to the conclusion of Reigns winning.  Fans began supporting other underdog competitors like Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler, who were also unceremoniously eliminated like rags dolls by the Big Show and Kane, who started to dominate the Rumble match.  Bray Wyatt, meanwhile, was looking pretty good here and racked up some eliminations and fans even started to flock to him.  As you would imagine, Wyatt was eliminated like he was nothing as well.  The end of the Rumble featured Roman Reigns, Big Show, and Kane.  The fans now had absolutely no one to root for.  After Reigns eliminated the giants, they returned to the ring and attacked him.  The Rock came out to save his cousin Roman Reigns from the beat down.  Meanwhile, Rusev was outside the ring, as he had rolled out earlier and was never eliminated.  Fans actually started rooting for Rusev, as he tried to sneak attack Reigns when he re-entered the ring.  Reigns countered and nailed Rusev with a spear, followed by eliminating him to officially win the Rumble.  At this point, the fans were booing like crazy and even booed when The Rock raised Roman's hand in victory.  The Rock looked both baffled and angry at the same time.  Then the hatred really started for Reigns!  Were the fans being ridiculous?  Yes, they were!  But again, I ask, what else did WWE think was going to happen?

In order to get the fans behind Roman Reigns, WWE had Daniel Bryan himself, after losing a match to Reigns, give him his blessing.  The fans were still not having it!  Roman went on to challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE Title at WrestleMania.  It was actually a pretty good match and hard hitting.  Roman took some punishment but kept coming back for more.  In the middle of the match, Seth Rollins cashed in his "Money In the Bank" contract and pinned Reigns to become the new Champion.  That was a damn cool moment that many believe saved the WrestleMania main event.  However, I can't help but feel maybe Reigns got screwed here when WWE called an audible due to the reactions he was getting, mixed with the news that Lesnar was re-signing with the company.  Had he won it here to begin with, perhaps they could have avoided future times of Reigns getting booed.  At the very least, then we might not have had to suffer through more Reigns/Lesnar matches in the years to come.

The third mistake is something that is actually still happening to this day.  WWE tried to book Roman like an underdog.  You can't do that with someone that looks like Roman Reign.  It just doesn't work!  Look at Roman!  Being an underdog is certainly not one of his qualities.  Rey Misterio perfected the role years ago, and Daniel Bryan was the latest.  Right now, someone like Johnny Gargano would be considered an underdog.  I know some will say that guys like Hulk Hogan went into matches with monsters but the difference is, Hogan rarely was the underdog.  Only against Andre the Giant did it seem like Hogan had little chance to win.  Plus, nine times out of ten, Hogan prevailed.  True underdogs tend not to win as much, if at all sometimes.

As we continue the tale of Roman Reigns, there were several times where they tried to portray him as the underdog, with a brief moment in time where they got it right.  Reigns got screwed out of winning "Money In the Bank" when Bray Wyatt appeared and pushed him off a ladder.  After finally becoming WWE Champion at the 2015 Survivor Series, Sheamus cashed in his "Money In the Bank" contract and won the Title.  Reigns was set for a rematch with the Celtic Warrior at TLC.  With the help of his League of Nations cohorts, Sheamus won the match and retained the WWE Title. Suddenly, it dawned on WWE that they need to do something different with Reigns.  Reigns was pissed and he attacked Sheamus, Rusev, and Alberto Del Rio.  Triple H and Stephanie McMahon tried to calm him down but he then attacked Triple H pretty aggressively.  And something crazy happened!  The fans started to cheer for Roman Reigns!  The next night on Raw, Reigns demanded a rematch and even punched out the chairman, Mr. McMahon, to a raucous ovation.  When he defeated Sheamus to regain the WWE Championship, the fans were all for it!  In fact, I was loving every minute of it!  The dominant and silent bad ass was clearly the way to go!  Of course, the momentum was ruined just a week or so later and WWE was back to square one with the fans booing Reigns.

Mistake number four is something that some might not agree with as a mistake but hear me out. After The Shield broke up, Seth Rollins went corporate and changed, no longer sporting the tactical gear.  Ambrose also changed up his look, now coming to the ring in jeans.  Both changed their entrances and music.  Reigns, on the other hand, did not change at all!  He kept the same look, the same entrance, and the same music.  I believe it's important for wrestlers to evolve.  I also disliked it because it reminded me of happier times when The Shield was a unit.  I think it diminished the possible ovation to a future Shield reunion by reminding people of the trio every time Reigns appeared.  It was also slightly unfair as Roman basically got to keep what made him relevant.  However, I can kind of see this as WWE's intention, thinking that since the fans enjoyed The Shield, they would enjoy Reigns displaying every factor that made people love The Shield.

The 2016 Royal Rumble stacked the odds against Reigns once again, when he was forced to defend his Title in the 30-man Royal Rumble match itself.  It was historic, as the WWE Championship hadn't been defended in the Rumble in 24 years, when Ric Flair won it in 1992.  Reigns entered the ring at number one.  Fans automatically assumed that he was going to go the distance and win the Rumble once again, a la Shawn Michaels in 1995.  The opposite happened and although Reigns did not win, I felt this Rumble was booked incorrectly as well.  In the middle of the match, the League of Nations appeared and with the aide of Mr. McMahon, attacked Reigns.  After Rusev splashed Reigns through a table, medics came to put Reigns on a stretcher.   Everyone then assumed that Reigns was going to be stretchered out, only to come back later on and win.  Reigns missed 30 minutes of this match due to this.  I wouldn't have been as upset if he had actually been stretchered out, but he left on his own two feet.  If he was well enough to do that, there's no reason he couldn't have continued the match. Showing courage would have helped but he came off looking like a coward, a heelish tactic.  Him missing that much of the match without being hurt enough to do so, made fans boo when he reappeared.  After he returned, he was eliminated and Triple H of all people, won the Royal Rumble and the WWE Championship.  I should mention that the last man eliminated was Dean Ambrose, who fans were thirsty for to win.  Triple H winning in general didn't bother me but I disliked Reigns leaving on his own accord and returning later.  There was one reason I disliked Triple H winning and that was because it would lead to Reigns defeating Triple H at WrestleMania for his third WWE Championship reign in a period of five months.  I didn't even like these hot potato title reigns when The Rock and Mankind did it, and I certainly didn't like it here!

I'm going to revisit the reason I made this blog in the first place.  Pictured here is the tweet a friend of mine created.  I thought it was kind of funny and definitely harmless.  Along with this picture, she tweeted: "I think my food is onto something."  It did not resemble irrational hatred of Reigns at all in my opinion.  Here's where the hypocrisy lies!  The amount of backlash my friend received from this tweet was completely uncalled for.  I hate to make assumptions, but these extreme Reigns lovers must have been kids, or at least I hope they were.  It's fine to be a fan of someone but vehemently defending them when someone says something negative is ridiculous.  Her tweet was not premeditated, as it happened in the moment because she thought it would be funny.  I was certainly amused!  Are Reigns haters dumb and irrational?  Yes, sometimes they can be!  However, the shoe is certainly on the other foot and these Reigns defenders are just as bad.  So to all these people that went on a hate rant on my friend for no reason, they can go to hell!

All of the mistakes with Reigns and this recent activity combine to form the misconception of Roman Reigns haters.  I think many fans are not necessarily hating the person Roman Reigns or even the character Roman Reigns.  They are booing his booking and that I believe is a majority of why the hate started and remains to this day.  You can't book someone like Roman Reigns as an underdog. When he portrayed the silent bad ass, fans started to approve again.  I'll admit, the hate for Reigns does get out of hand and sometimes ruins matches fans might have been looking forward to.  In fact, it gets downright stupid!  None of this is Roman's fault.  Although, another reason fans resist Reigns is the clear scripted promos they make him do, as he comes off robotic and monotone.  I actually enjoy Roman Reigns but certainly disagree with the way his character is portrayed.  In fact, when The Shield reformed, it was the first time Reigns was unanimously cheered in a long time.

Finally, and this is debatable, WWE is intent on trying to portray him as a babyface and refuse to turn him heel.  Do I think a heel turn will fix everything?  Maybe not, but it couldn't hurt to at least try it!  The closest they came was after he defeated the Undertaker at WrestleMania.  The next night, he received a tremendous chorus of boos, before finally uttering; "this is my yard now," followed by a mic drop.  Many will respond that all turning Reigns will do is cause the people that boo him to cheer and the people that cheer him to boo.  What's so wrong with that?  I think these people are underestimating how fans will react.  For all they know, a majority will still boo Reigns, only for the right reasons this time.  If you give people reasons to boo someone, they'll boo.  If you give people reasons to cheer someone, they'll cheer.  That's why fans aren't always reacting the way WWE would prefer them to.  I've always cheered for who I liked and booed who I didn't like, whether they were heels or babyfaces.  I grew up loving Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and often cheered for the Million Dollar Man and Mr. Perfect.  I understood and enjoyed the sarcasm of the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers waving tiny American flags.  I refuse to conform to these unwritten rules and if that makes me wrong, then so be it.

At the end of the day, while many Reigns haters are doing so irrationally, I've shown that people on the opposite side are just as bad.  I also fully believe that many so-called Reigns haters are more so hating the way he's been booked and the only way to convince WWE of this in their minds is to boo him.  To be fair, Reigns hasn't been near a World Title in over two years so I don't think people can fairly say he's been pushed down their throats.  On the other hand, how WWE hasn't capitalized on Braun Strowman to dethrone Brock Lesnar and be the next Champion is beyond me.  Despite what people may think about Roman Reigns, it's hard to deny that Braun is the guy the fans are behind these days.  By the way, let's give credit where credit is due.  A large part of why Braun is so over now is due to his feud and matches with one Roman Reigns.  I don't think the Roman Reigns project is necessarily finished, but it does need a fine-tuned adjustment.

Does Brock Lesnar's Lack of Appearances Really Make the Championship Seem More Important?

There was frankly no way to shorten the title of this blog without presenting a clear understanding of what this is about.  Earlier today, I was leisurely perusing some wrestling websites, as I'm sure many other wrestling fans do.  I came across an article about Brock Lesnar, discussing the possibility of stripping him of the Universal Championship that he's had since April 2, 2017.  The author proposed doing this so other wrestlers could be the Champion.  I then started reading the comments that followed.  Some people wanted Braun Strowman to cash in his "Money In the Bank" either before or after a probable Title defense against Roman Reigns.  Some dismissed Reigns completely as a follow-up Champion.

As I read further in the comments, I started seeing opinions on the prestige of the Championship increasing due to Lesnar's few and far between appearances.   One particular person compared it to over thirty years ago during Hulk Hogan's time as the WWF Champion.  That's what lost me and I'll tell you why!  First of all, it's an unfair comparison due to completely different time periods.  Second, it's completely untrue!  I knew from my 35 years of watching wrestling that it was untrue but I dug a little further and did some research.

Before I get into that, I want to get into a similar comment I saw weeks ago, comparing Brock's reign to Bruno Sammartino's in the 60's.  Similar to what I'm about to say regarding Hogan's big reign in the mid-80's, I found that Bruno actually appeared and defended his Championship more than Brock had in a year's time.  Bruno won the Title in May of 1963.  In the time from when he won it until the end of the year, Bruno wrestled, and even defended the Championship twice as many times Lesnar has his Championship in a full year.  I didn't even count an entire year for Bruno's matches and Title defenses.  Now, back to Hulk Hogan!

I used the year 1987 specifically for a comparison.  In January of 1987, Hogan had now been the WWF Champion for exactly three years.  He started the year off strong, finishing his feud with "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff in a Steel Cage Championship match on Saturday Night's Main Event.  In the entire year of 1987, Hogan made 145 appearances.  Of course, there was less content on television and Pay-Per-View at this time so that's one way the comparison itself is unfair.  21 of those appearances were televised in some form.  14 of those appearances were matches.  11 of those matches were Title defenses.  Even if we take take that number, which is the smallest of the numbers I will be discussing, that is the same amount of times that Brock Lesnar has wrestled in a full year, and probably not much lower than Lesnar's all-time appearances in a full year.

Of those 145 appearances Hulk Hogan made in 1987, he had 135 matches.  Of those 135 matches, 117 of them were Title defenses.  Yes, this does include House Shows.  However, just because matches weren't televised, doesn't mean they didn't happen.  In fact, there was a even a time before television was invented that wrestling matches still took place.  Does it decrease the importance of these matches in any way?  I didn't think so!  So, there it is!  I couldn't get the exact count of all of Lesnar's appearances but you get the idea.  I do know that in general, Lesnar doesn't work House Shows.  From the time he defeated Goldberg for the Universal Title until his defense against Roman Reigns at this past WrestleMania, Lesnar wrestled at a total of four house shows.  Meanwhile, in 1987, Hogan made 124 House Show appearances and wrestled 120 of those, many of which were Title defenses.  Not only that, there was no weekly Raw or Smackdown in Hogan's days, nor were there as many Pay-Per-Views or televised shows compared to today.

Therefore, to compare Lesnar's lack of appearances to Hogan's or Bruno's is ridiculous!  Even if we discount the House Shows during Hogan's 1987, he still had 11 Title defenses, which is the exact amount of matches Lesnar had in a year's time.  He defeated Goldberg for the Championship, wrestled one non-Title match with AJ Styles, and defended it 9 times.  That includes 4 house shows, which makes his televised matches a total of 7.  But for argument's sake, does this make it more special when the Champion shows up or defends the Title?  Many would argue that it does!  I can understand that but these days, there is a lot more content than there used to be.  Raw operates every single week, as does Smackdown.  The House Show circuit continues to this day.  There is at least one Pay-Per-View a month, if not more.  There is more of a demand for wrestlers to appear in my opinion.

Even if Lesnar doesn't work House Shows at all, he shows up to wrestle very little, and shows up in total probably not that much more.  Let me be clear, though!  This is not a knock on Lesnar at all!  This is all on WWE as he is only willing to appear or wrestle if they pay him.  I understand it costs a lot of money for a Lesnar appearance.  I also understand that someone like Lesnar is a special attraction!  However, I think that a special attraction should not be holding what is to be believed as the top Championship of the Raw brand.  Honestly, it's all irrelevant anyway, as I don't consider the Universal Title as a World Title, or even care about it all.  Even so, people would be just as upset if AJ Styles didn't show up with the WWE Championship most of the year.  In this day and age, I think the Champion should appear a lot more.  I'm not saying they should have Lesnar show up at every Raw and Pay-Per-View, or even House Shows at all, but I do feel the Champion should be around more often than the current situation.

Speaking of special attractions, I also came across a comment in that same article regarding Ronda Rousey as a special attraction.  Is Ronda Rousey a special attraction?  Yes, she most certainly is!  Here is the difference, though!  Since before WrestleMania this year, Ronda has worked a few House Shows, and she probably will do so more this year.  She's already made more total appearances this year than Lesnar has.  While yes, she's only had two televised matches, she's not the Champion!  For instance, during her current "suspension," I'm sure she is using this time to train, both in the ring and on the microphone.  Since her surprise appearance at the end of the Royal Rumble in January, she has improved by leaps and bounds.  I'm sure once she catches on completely, she'll be competing and appearing a lot more.

She is slated to return on the Raw after Extreme Rules this month.  I have a scenario in mind.  I believe she will either challenge Alexa Bliss for the Raw Women's Title, which may or may not contain Nia Jax, or she will team with her pal Natalya against Alexa and Mickie James.  Whatever match happens will probably go down at SummerSlam.  Should it be the tag team match I think it might be, I could see it going down as the following.  Natalya turns on Ronda during the match and Ronda is then "injured" for a short period of time.  She then returns either during September's Clash of Champions show or the night after on Raw and they start setting up her impending match with Natalya at Hell In a Cell.  They could use that time, this early in her WWE career, for her to train more, which I believe is the idea.  She could wrestle as part of a team at the Survivor Series and then not necessarily wrestle until the 2019 Royal Rumble.  If Ronda stays on after the following WrestleMania, especially if she has a run as Women's Champion, by then she will be showing up a lot more.

Back to the topic at hand!  For the record, I am totally okay with Lesnar showing up sparingly.  However, I am not okay with him doing so as Champion.  That just doesn't work in 2018!  Again, I'm not saying the Champion has to appear on every single Raw or even every single Pay-Per-View.  However, the Champion should show up more than Lesnar has and currently does.  At the very, very least, have Paul Heyman make more appearances on behalf of his client!  I know it's WWE and you can throw logic out the window, meaning they don't always enforce the 30-day rule for Champions.  I do, however, have a problem when they choose to enforce this for other wrestlers.  I don't agree with picking and choosing the enforcement of this rule so either follow it completely, or don't at all!  There should be no middle ground!  I think that these days, a Champion hardly ever showing up is a problem and actually lessens the importance of the Title.  Altogether though, the biggest problem of all I've had with Lesnar holding the Title is the one day he didn't even bring the Championship with him.  That really lessens the credibility of a Championship and the Champion himself!  I'm hoping there will be opinions on this.
